Scrap Wood Trivet

Hi everyone!  The project I am going to share today is super easy, fun, and useful.  Plus, if you have scraps laying around it can also be free!!  Here is my Scrap Wood Trivet…

I am so loving it!

But, I probably love it even more because it was a happy accident.  Let me start from the beginning…

scrap wood before

It began with these four pieces of scrap wood, they were left over pieces from the drawer fronts of my Reclaimed wood media console.  (which, by the way, was also made entirely from scraps) 🙂

I was planning on using them to make some small trivets that would be 8” square so I cut the four boards to 8”.  When I finished and saw the four pieces I had cut off the end of the boards I got an idea…

dry fitting scraps into a pattern

I took the pieces and started playing around…and ended up with this.  Of course I fell in love with it, and decided I would make a larger trivet with this wood and use some other scrap 1×3 wood for my smaller trivets.  (can you see the small white boards off to the side?  Those are crib slats and I used those for the smaller trivets)  So that is how this trivet came about, I love unexpected projects! 🙂

cutting a base board for a trivet

I debated threading through the pieces with rope to connect them, but knew my time was limited so I opted to just glue them to a base piece of wood.

When I did my kids frozen treat stand a few months ago we accidentally broke the top piece to the night stand we repurposed.  I knew it would be perfect for this trivet base, so I cut it to size with my Kreg Rip-Cut and Ryobi Circular Saw.

staining wood

I applied wood conditioner to all the pieces and stained the bottom piece with Rustoleum Kona.  For the top pieces I used Minwax natural stain.

wood dimensions for scrap wood trivet

This is what I ended up with when I was done cutting and staining the wood.

For one large trivet you will need:

4- 1×3’s @ 8”
4- 1×3’s @ 2 3/4”
1- piece of plywood or project panel wood cut to 10 1/2” square
DAP Rapid Fuse
Finishing supplies (paint, stain as desired)
Miter saw or Circular saw to cut the wood

using Dap rapid fuse to make trivet

I was introduced to DAP Rapid Fuse at Haven (a blogging conference) this year.  It really works amazingly well and I am excited to use it more in the future!  I was using it on my small trivets and decided to also use it for this large one.

gluing pieces together

I started by gluing the outside pieces and the middle pieces together first.  Then I glued the outside square to the base board, and finished by centering the middle piece inside.

Here is a visual of the whole process.  Add glue to one of the sides, then put the pieces together and press firmly for 30 seconds, done.  I recommend you wear gloves when you use this glue, I was out of them, and made sure I was really careful…but do as I say not as I do…

What I love about this adhesive is that it holds in 30 seconds, and cures in 30 minutes and it is strong as heck!  A quick and easy way to do a small project!
