Wise words from Dumbledore

I have to admit I am a huge Harry Potter fan, in fact I love reading a lot of young adult fiction.  Which is good because then I know a lot of good books for my kids to read!

Harry Potter is one of my favorite series though, especially if you listen to it on CD, because Jim Dale does an amazing job!  Anyway, on to the sign…

I made it for my brother-in-law.  He made us an AMAZING AWESOME HUGE lazy susan for my table and it is BEAUTIFUL! I will have to share it with you soon! (Thanks Jason)

In a small way, to say thank you, I told him I would make him a sign, and he requested this quote from Albus Dumbledore.

I started out in the normal way.  Painted the board black, put on the stencil, and proceeded to ignore the little voice in my head saying you shouldn’t use that gloss paint….

Well, I am here to tell you that you should never ignore that little voice in your head.  Needless to say,  I ended up starting over.  Sorry no mess up picture I got too busy to take them!  I sanded it down and used the other side of the board.

Why not use gloss paint?  Well simple, it peels with the stencil and makes life very difficult!  Use a flat paint!

It is a good thing I always save the negative of my stencil (I cut it out of contact paper by the way). I just had to use the reverse technique. I took clear contact paper and put it over the letters so I could transfer them.

I painted the board white this time.  Then as you can see above, I put on the contact paper with stencil already transferred.  I rubbed it down good with a credit card and peeled up the contact (or transfer) paper.

The letters were now on my board.  Time to paint!  If you do not want bleeding I would suggest painting on a layer of white (your base color) first, remember no gloss!  Then do the main color.  I used black.

I ended up spray painting it with a flat black.  I forgot, again, to take a picture before I peeled off the letters.  You can see them next to the board above.

Aaaannnnnd….. we could play the find it game!  Do you see the chocolate bunny?  The gum pack?  A sneak peek of my new Amazing lazy susan?  The paint brush I used the night before to try to fix my mistake that still has paint crusted on it?

That was fun!  Now you know I work in a mess!

I gave the sign some distressing and made it look a little old like anything in Harry Potter times should look, and finished it off with a gloss finish!

I have to admit it looks better in person, the pictures just aren’t doing it for me.  My brother in law is a middle school science teacher, I hope this inspires his kids to make good choices!

Have you read Harry Potter?

Hugs!
